Known for transformative, community-focused designs like the recently completed Albion Library, the revitalization of Nathan Phillips Square, and the competition-winning design for York University’s School of Continuing Studies, the Toronto studio of global architecture and design firm Perkins+Will will relocate this summer to the city’s vibrant downtown. Occupying prime real estate at 110 Yonge Street, the firm’s new studio will be easily accessible to staff and clients alike, and well-connected to the surrounding community it serves.
“Over the last decade, our practice areas have evolved dramatically. Our work now includes urban design, transit and corporate workplace”, said D’Arcy Arthurs, managing director of Perkins+Will’s Ontario practice, which includes Toronto and Ottawa studios. “In addition, our traditional practice areas in higher education and recreation have moved into the core of the city. It seemed only natural to re-centre our studio to be closer to our clients and their projects.”
Using data collected by staff surveys, observation, and analysis, the design of the new Perkins+Will studio at 110 Yonge Street prioritizes employee health and wellness, inclusivity, and sustainability. Conceived as a flexible, multi-purpose “living laboratory” that fuels design experimentation and research, it will feature communal areas to host clients and guests, and an array of open and enclosed spaces to allow staff to choose where, when, and how they work.
"Designing our own space in the heart of the city has provided an opportunity to respond to our own convictions and a point in history when Toronto is experiencing explosive growth and intensification,” said Andrew Frontini, design director of Perkins+Will’s Ontario practice. “The shear concentration of ideas, people, movement and built form has inspired us to create a space that is all about connectivity and engagement – our own design forum in the City. We are taking commercial space from the mid-twentieth century and transforming it into a manifestation of the ideas and values that we are most committed to: sustainability, health and wellness, community and design excellence. It is going to be a robust, adaptable and fun space that supports and displays our unique, creative culture.”
The project targets both LEED Gold and Fitwel certifications. Construction is scheduled to start later this month.
