Perkins+Will Designs Authentic and Empowered Workplace for Bench Accounting

Perkins+Will designs an empowered workplace for growing technology company Bench Accounting’s new office headquarters in Vancouver. The office design embodies Bench’s workplace culture that focuses on empowering its employees through creating a work environment that provides choice, wellness, and community connection.

“By providing a variety of spaces, Bench’s new office empowers its employees by offering a choice in work setting,” says Sarah Stanford, an interior design lead at Perkins+Will. “This philosophy extends to wellness, integrating a wealth of design strategies to support well-being—from access to daylight and healthy materials to informal gathering and community spaces.”

Bench provides a cloud-based service that simplifies bookkeeping for small businesses and entrepreneurs. This concept of simplicity is translated into the office’s authentic design that honours the inherent value of the materials and use of space, and encourages social connection. The 50,000-square-foot office is designed to be comfortable and reconfigurable to suit team needs. Apart from individual workstations, the design provides 24 different types of workspaces that equates to a ratio of 0.8 alternative work settings for every dedicated workstation. Each of the three floors includes its own unique lounge and fully serviced kitchen.

“At the core of our workplace culture is employee understanding,” says Evan Birch, senior manager of finance and administration at Bench. “We believe that if you support their needs they will be more engaged and have more to give clients, and Perkins+Will clearly reflected this thinking throughout our new office design.”
